The Department of Neurology and Stroke Unit is located in the 
ASST di Mantova in the historical city of Mantua, in the south-east of Lombardia region in Italy, and serves a rural province of 415,000 inhabitants. “ASST di Mantova” is a public non-university hospital with high level specialties as Cardio Surgery, Vascular Surgery and Thoracic Surgery. The main characteristics of our department are the following:
1) in-patients clinic: 30 beds for in-patients clinic with 16 beds dedicated to patients with acute stroke (4 stroke unit beds have a semi-intensive care);
2) personnel: 12 neurologists (4 dedicated to the stroke unit, 2 dedicated to outpatients clinic and 6 to general neurology) and 24 nurses; 3 neurosurgeons join the team for the management of neurosurgical emergencies;
3) organization: one neurologist is on duty 24 hrs per day for the emergencies, TC and MR are available 24 hrs per day; two Rehabilitation Units are available for a total of 80 beds;
4) pathways: there are consolidated pathways for stroke patients from the admission in stroke unit to transfer to Rehabilitation Unit and/or return home; moreover, specific pathways exist for systemic thrombolysis and embolectomy;
5) scientific experience: the Stroke Unit/ Dpt of Neurology is enrolling for the TICH2 (Tranexamic acid in IntraCerebral Hemorrhage-2) international trial (we are national coordinator for this study) and for the STACI (Surgical Treatment of Acute Cerebral Ischemia) trial, an Italian RCT on early versus delayed endoarterectomy for symptomatic internal carotid stenosis; AC, the director of Neurosciences’ Department, has a long term experience in the design and coordination of clinical trials, is an active Cochrane Reviewer, he is in the Clinical and Research Committee of the Cochrane Neurological Field (http://neuronet.cochrane.org), in the Advisory Board for the Neurosciences of the Italian Agency for Medicines; in the Steering Committee of the Hospital Neurosciences Italian Society and is one of the authors of the Italian guidelines for the treatment and prevention of stroke.
